Walking in the Cape Floral Kingdom, South Africa
1 - 12 September 2010
Fabulous day walks embracing Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, penguins, whales, wine & the Cape’s famous flowering fynbos.
After a break of three years Pete Hawkins is back, donning his boots to lead walks in some of the most spectacular walking destinations in the World and welcomes you to join him.
The southernmost tip of Africa is a beautiful place to walk and we’re timing this trip to coincide with the arrival of Southern Right Whales, which come to the shallower coastal waters to calve every year and the flowering of the fynbos, the unique plant community only found in this small area of Southern Africa. This will be a return trip to Cape Province for us because we know it is a stunningly beautiful part of the world with some very memorable walks and has excellent accommodation. Furthermore you will be visiting a very different country but one that is only 2 hours ahead of GMT, so there’s no jet lag!
South Africa is a great outdoor country and is definitely best explored on foot. The Cape Province offers a fabulous variety of walks along coastal footpaths, on mountain trails and amongst beautiful vineyards and lowland flowering fynbos, with minimal travelling distances involved. In South Africa the National Parks protect large tracts of its natural landscape and provide an excellent network of well maintained trails ideal for day walks, with the added bonus of seeing whales, penguins, seals, bird watching, enjoying great sweeps of flowering fynbos and quaffing some fine wines!
Walks are on average 5 – 16kms and with our own transport on hand we are able to offer shorter options when practical. Pete Hawkins is a professional Mountain Leader who has led many of our walking holidays around the globe since 1991 as well as teaching navigation courses in the UK. He sets a leisurely pace so that you can absorb the natural environment you are in. Distances covered are not great but with picnic lunches and tea stops and time to embrace the local culture you are out for a full day. Pete is great at creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere whilst providing caring and appropriate guidance. Whilst Pete will be armed with bird and flower books and maps, the local walking guide will help identify species for you and find the best trails to suit everyone in the party.
Few other walking destinations offer so much. This is definitely a walking holiday not to be missed.
