Paint Under African Skies with Hazel Soan
March 2 to 14, 2010
Join one of the UK’s most popular art tutors on a unique painting holiday that captures the spirit of Kenya and follows in the footsteps of Karen Blixen and Joy Adamson
AFRICA is romantic and wild – a combination that attracts many artists. Karen Blixen and Joy Adamson were drawn to Kenya, as Hazel Soan has been to South Africa and their love of its wildlife and its people is portrayed in their works. We have carefully and personally chosen an itinerary that will suit students who are less pioneering but who want to capture the spirit of Africa. You will be staying at Karen Blixen’s Cottages in a leafy suburb of Nairobi and at Elsamere, the former home of Joy Adamson, situated in the beautiful Rift Valley, providing a very personal glimpse in to their African dreams.
Every day will be spent painting a different aspect of Kenya. You’ll be able to paint lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and other wildlife in Nairobi National Park, at Giraffe Manor and Daphne Sheldrick’s elephant orphanage. On other days you’ll be painting amongst butterflies, birds and the exotic flora in the Arboretum and Karen Blixen’s Coffee garden. In the Rift Valley you’ll spend a day at Kenya’s oldest tea plantation and on the shores of Lake Nakuru as well as painting the Colobus monkeys and hippos in Joy Adamson’s garden. A highlight and exceptional privilege will be the time spent painting in an authentic Maasai village near to the Ngong Hills, capturing every day life scenes and these wonderfully colourful people.
HAZEL SOAN is a hugely popular and dedicated art tutor. She featured in the Watercolour Challenge TV series and has published many instructional books including African Watercolours. Hazel is a warm and kind person with a natural ability to inspire and teach. Her style of teaching and approach to working in situ is suitable for students of all abilities and makes for an immensely rewarding painting holiday.
